Comments: SEX DEATH & UNICORNS is an astounding visual odyssey of art and interactive works, on display at Steve Martin Gallery for the month of May. Exploring themes of anthropomorphism and zoomorphism, a select group of local artists illustrate an innately reflective account of human behavior. Throughout history, people within a specific society will develop ideas about other humans and non human entities based on their own personal realities and experiences. People develop these specific conceptions of 'seeing' or schema which are the manifestations of one's own culture. This need to understand ones own environment unfolds as we 'humanize' animals and objects in art and literature. Visual artists in particular are able to digest and share their unique interpretations of the culture around us. By assigning characteristics to non human entities, such as the personification of an angry North Wind or satirical political cartoons, artists illustrate the ideologies of the day. Sex Death and Unicorns showcases theses unique interpretations through the interactive and visual works of local artists Midori Tajiri-Byrd, Christa Ougel, Jeremy Novy, Emily Lovejoy, Terry Owens, Dee Robertson, Ben Miller, and more! Coinciding with Saturdays art walk on Julia Street, the opening party on Saturday, May 7th from 6-9pm at Steve Martin Gallery, will feature Curious Cupcakes and specialty cocktails! Come in costume or snap a selfie with one of our interactive displays!
